In Evening in the Palace of Reason author James R. Gaines sets Johann Sebastian Bach in opposition to Frederick the Great at the beginning of the so-called Age of Enlightenment and through the music of Bach we know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth [Job 19:25] and that what is called science [sic] has in no way triumphed over hope. In McCormmach’s world that he has created for Jakob it has and he is left with nothing but stale bread, despair and suicide. What makes the book so thoroughly depressing is that McCormmach and Jakob have never even lived in a world where they knew Bach or that reason could be used to support faith instead of destroying it.
